Appearing as if in a dream, my subjects are symbolic and require a bit of knowledge, either held or sought, to decode the meaning. The colors evolved from monochromatic yellow to this decidedly feminine palette of pretty pastels.

🦚 Colloquially, both male and female peafowl are called “peacocks”. But as I read about peafowl, I learned that the male is the only one to have brightly colored feathers. He even sheds and regrows them, each time longer and fuller! The peahen (female) has muted cream and brown coloring and lacks the iconic tailfeather display of her mate. The brilliant display of the male contrasts with the muted, softer, camouflaging plumes of the female.

🦚 Both male and female peafowl feature a flamboyant, standout crown atop their heads known as the crest. It’s more than adornment, it’s a sensor, too. When the male fans out his trademark tailfeathers, he also shakes them at the high speed of 26 times per second creating a rattling noise. The watching peahen’s crest feathers are tuned to vibrate at the exact frequencies at which the male rattles his tail. The peahen doesn’t just see his spectacularly ostentatious tailfeather display, she also feels its vibration in her crest. Rhythmic circles played in my mind, yet quickly a strong grid was added. A fundamental foundation pushed through at the onset. The cross stretched out across the board in black and white. Terrestrial colors went down; the blue and green palette made me think of the earth/a globe. That, coupled with the cross, got me thinking about how Christ came down to earth and dwelt among us. He gave up His celestial home to abide in our broken world. He became human, yet still fully God.

💚 The longer I live, the more life reveals that the human existence is hard! And yet, God left heaven to come live this arduous existence and to sacrifice His perfection for the flawed creatures that we all are. Because we could never be enough on our own, He bridged the gap. I wasn't brave enough. I wasn't strong enough. I wasn't exciting enough. I wasn't thoughtful enough. I wasn't kind enough. I didn't quite measure up to what I thought I should be.

❤️ The studio sessions are always exercises in listening and leaning into what my spirit senses. Black and white (truth) against the various colors (contemplations/questions/confusion). Layer upon layer, I painted, sanded, rinsed, and repeated. All the while, I was reading/praying/reflecting/pondering. As I mentioned, I started the piece wanting to do something different, something loose, something easy, something playful. And while there are circles, even they became part of my familiar mapped out grid. Which leads me to this question... Do we ever truly change, or do we simply develop and enhance who we are? I’m not sure. But this I know; because of who God is, I can rest and rejoice within the safety of His sovereignty. There aren't words to adequately explain the depth of what God is still showing me through this piece.

🎨 In both art and in life, I generally want to be pleasing. I want to present something that will be well received. Truthfully, that can be stifling sometimes, as I can only be- I can only produce- I can only offer who I am. And I'm still discovering who I am at 51 years old! What I thought would be playful, swirly, abstract, and fun became the recurring, comforting, foundational, grid of lines and angles locked into place forming the cross. The cross spans the composition and echoes outward from a central heart. The love of God remains my ever-present focal point. Because God is Love, I am loved. Talk about setting a high standard❗ Being 5 years my senior, Drew Pittman drove me and our sister, Kelly Pittman Gilley, everywhere with his own chosen accompaniment at nearly full volume. In the car, we listened to cassettes long before CDs hit the scene. While music technology has advanced rapidly and dramatically, the sound quality of vinyl is still unmatched and unmistakable. Plus, album covers are quite beautiful! 🎨 This painting displays an abstract turntable with the needle dropped on spinning records, hearts, x's & o's, all expressing a sincere love of music and memories of the soundtrack of youth. I started this sketch in 2007 inspired by a picture we took while walking around San Francisco. Through the gate of a stunning home, we glimpsed a peek of a gorgeous view beyond. I can still remember that day, that walk, that view! Stashed away for years, my original sketch represents early notions of marriage/goals/dreams. Occasionally, I’d pull out the old composition and reflect on the day, the start, our beginnings as a couple. Then, I’d carefully store it away like a photo album of old. Recently, I decided to develop the piece into more of my current style and liking. It was pretty and picturesque, but it lacked substance and boundaries and grit. It needed variety, texture, depth and boldness! Just as our marriage has grown and deepened and evolved over these years together, so this piece has emerged. I added layers of color and contrasts and allowed the lines to blur and stretch and blend. I even cropped away the extraneous margins. The focused result suits me better now. The proportions seem right, a better fit I think. So, we’ve moved through the gate; we’ve walked on together. It started with Fanny Crosby’s hymn, Tell Me the Story of Jesus. I looked up the familiar song that I grew up singing in church, and I was amazed at what I learned about the songwriter. The poetess, Fanny Crosby (1820 - 1915), penned over 9,000 hymns in her lifetime. And she was blind. Reading about her amazing life bolstered my passion and purpose of contributing to FSDB through my painting sales. Learning about Fanny Crosby felt like a wink from God, a confirmation of sorts to use whatever gifts I have to offer to the benefit of others. As I developed the composition, the song Write Your Story, by Francesca Battistelli (born 1985), chimed in! The old hymn and new song both share the timeless message that Christ is the author of the only story worth telling/believing/living. If you aren’t familiar with it, I encourage you to check it out. I often feel at the mercy of the process – same as in life. I remind myself repeatedly that I am only required to show up. I am merely the vessel of His purpose. As a steward of any gifts I’ve been given, my job and joy is to tune in to His will and way, and then let it flow. What emerged here in the center of this canvas is what came to look like a paint brush to me, which was a wink of wisdom. Like a flowering bud it pushed through! I trust that God will fulfill His purpose for me and my creative bent. I go to the studio, and He meets me there. Love is indeed breaking through when the Father’s in the room. You know those people that just kind of rub you the wrong way--but God still uses the encounter for His ultimate good--to knock off a few rough and jagged edges?
